CLUB HISTORY
On Thursday evening, February 19, 1920 sixteen Lewisburg community leaders, led by W. L. Donehower and Daniel Green, organized the Lewisburg Rotary Club.
One of the first actions of the new club was to found the Susquehanna Boy Scout Council. Starting in 1925 the Club began a long-time commitment to support care for crippled children at the Geisinger Medical Center. In the same year Lewisburg Rotarians helped to raise funds for an auditorium and a gymnasium to be included in the new high school building.
During the 60's the club strongly supported the students who came to study in the Bucknell Institute for Foreign Students. Over the years the Lewisburg Rotary Club and its members have been active and supportive in many community organizations, including the Lewisburg Recreation Association, the United Way Campaign, and Soldiers Park. Recently the club played an important role in the Kidsburg playground project, and it supports the Donald Heiter Community Center, the Eastern UC Supplemental Food Program, the American Red Cross, and many others.
In 2000 the club was instrumental in founding a diabetes clinic in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. In 2001 it founded the Bucknell Rotaract Club. Through the Rotary Youth Exchange it continues to bring an international student each year to live a year in Lewisburg and attend Lewisburg Area High School, while providing an opportunity for area high school students to study abroad. The Lewisburg Rotary Club remains committed to supporting community needs both here and abroad.
